WORKSHOPS
I don’t have degrees in music, but it would be inaccurate to say that I am entirely self-taught: I’ve learnt firsthand from incredible musicians of the generations that came before, who imparted invaluable knowledge and sensibilities to me on musicianship, history, ethics, performance, composition, to name a few areas.
Music and the realm of sound isn’t discussed enough. I am always keen to share what I know, including studies that are in progress. Below are some topics I am excited to share; write to me if you have an opportunity for me to do so.
Designing Resonance: Resonance as an artistic strategy for composition, regardless of genre. Understanding resonance beyond spatial acoustics, for instance: to employ the overtone system and to enact frequencies based on how certain frequencies are perceived to diminish or reinforce others.
Decay as a Compositional Tool: A lesser-taught framework to think about harmony, decay is not solely the evaporation of sound but the diminishing intensity of a sound’s vibration. To explore the poetics and possibilities of decay means considering the interactions between sonic structures as they each decay in time.
Freeing Improvisation: Why is there a “sound” of free improvisation? What it means to spontaneously create (a) framework(s), as opposed to playing within one. Freeing improvisation from self-expression, from the dogma of genre – and anti-genre.
